  5. National Smile Month tries to reduce our dental anxiety

    22nd May 2017 by harpenden

Did you know that as many as two-thirds of Brits, some 67%, of people admit to being apprehensive when it comes to visiting the dentist for a check-up? This statistic came from Oral Health Foundation and Oral-B, and the poll also showed that the biggest reason behind this apprehension was the fear of pain and discomfort, followed closely by worries about the dental costs.

Campaigners from the charity initiative, National Smile Month, which is currently running from May 15th to June 15th, are hoping to alleviate some of this stress and anxiety associated with visiting your dentist. They are looking to reassure patients that there is nothing to be nervous about while visiting your dentist and the importance of overcoming this anxiety to look after your oral health.

    Oral-B Ambassador, Dr Uchenna Okoye, has suggested five different ways that people can eliminate dental concerns and anxieties, which we detail here;

    1) Communication – Speak with your dentist about any fears you have. A good dentist will always take your fears seriously, and they are well trained to deal with anxious patients. You could speak with friends or family members for recommendations of good dentists.
    2) Easy does it – if you ease yourself into dental appointments, this may make your visits easier. You could start gradually and make an appointment for a check-up and clean and polish, then work up to a more extensive treatment appointment once the trust has been established between the dentist and patient.
    3) The Early bird catches the worm – not literally of course, but if you book an early appointment, you will have less time to dwell on any worries. Plus you could always take a friend or family member with you.
    4) Music to my ears – you could try taking headphones and your own music to listen to. This can put people at ease during their appointment.
    5) Prevention is better than cure – if you look after your oral health by brushing twice a day, regularly flossing, using mouthwash and visiting your dentist every six months, this can aid in preventing any dental issues occurring in the first place.

Here at Harpenden Smiles, we welcome nervous patients. From the first time you enter our dental practice, you will be greeted by a friendly smile at our reception, and this welcoming approach will continue throughout your time with us. We want you to have a smile-filled dental experience.

  8. Crabtree School Visit

    12th February 2017 by harpenden

The team at Harpenden Smiles visited Crabtree Junior School last week and we received lovely feedback from the school of our visit!

“The children at Crabtree School very much enjoyed their visit from Harpenden Smiles dentist team. The presentation was both informative and engaging with a well-planned hands-on activity, that really got the #children thinking about the amount of sugar in their diets.

Since the visit, the children have shown good recall of what they learnt and have been keen to bring in photos of their disclosing tablet experiments completed at home. Thank you to the team.”

  9. Harpenden Smiles Six Month Smiles Article

    30th January 2017 by harpenden

Say Hello To Sixth Month Smiles

At Harpenden Smiles, we are continually developing our knowledge to ensure you have access to a comprehensive range of the very latest dental treatments. And to further add to our impressive list of smile enhancing treatments, one of our dentists, Bianna, recently attended a Six Month Smiles® course. She is now qualified to deliver this innovative and satisfyingly speedy orthodontic treatment.

Six Month Smiles perfectly complements Invisalign®, another of our orthodontic treatments, as it is an equally adult-friendly solution to crooked or overcrowded teeth. However, rather than being a series of clear, removable aligners, Six Month Smiles features clear fixed brackets with accompanying tooth-coloured wires – making it much less noticeable than ‘train-track’ braces. It also works in a fraction of the time as it focuses purely on the teeth that are revealed when you smile.

  10. Delivering Dental health Education

    14th November 2016 by harpenden

We’ve been getting out and about visiting local schools over the last few months and recently dropped in at The Grove School in Harpenden to share our dental health messages with the pupils.

The children listened eagerly as we explained how to keep teeth beautifully clean and they were delighted when we handed out tooth-friendly goody bags. We know the youngsters enjoyed our informative talk and learnt a thing or two about tooth care because they sent us a delightful thank you letter featuring photos of their very shiny teeth!

    2

We regularly present talks in schools with the aim of encouraging young children to develop excellent hygiene habits to help maintain healthy teeth for life. We also talked to pupils at the Manland Primary School in the summer – you can check out the video of our visit below.

We are always keen to promote children’s oral health and provide free check-ups for your child if you are a parent registered with us. We love seeing our youngest patients and even got into the Halloween spirit over half-term when we adorned the practice with spooky decorations, including plenty of scary spider webs. And, as an extra treat, all those children who had an appointment over half-term were entered into a prize draw to win an incredible trip to Disney Land Paris!

    1

Thank you to all parents who bring along their fabulous children for treatment – it makes us dentists very happy to see the younger generation learning how to take care of their teeth with confidence for the future.
